Hello and Happy Hurricane from a very tired g_rl who is also very sorry for not delivering posts as promised for the last few Fridays. While I’m sure, loyal readers, you were absolutely distraught without my weekly music picks, I have unfortunately been busy suffering from the crushing weight of late-stage capitalism and also having the flu. As it turns out, working 2 and a half kind of 3 jobs, going out, not sleeping, and substituting water exclusively for Diet Coke can have devastating effects on one’s health. Who knew?
Anyhow, we’re so back now and hopefully better. This week’s playlist is a funky little collection of blues, jazz and soul that I hope you can dance to on this fine rainy Sunday. Let me know what you’ve been spinning this week and of course stay safe <3

This breathtaking twelve-minute ballad sounds like a love song to the rain and feels like a hot cup of coffee for a cold soul. Ethereal, atmospheric and avant-garde, Chick Corea has delivered a true masterpiece to be treasured.
Warm, silky and sensual, Wither’s voice emulates the sound of summer. Grab your lover or your best friend or your mom or your cat and give them a spin, because this track is impossible not to dance to.
If you haven’t gotten into Ethiopian jazz yet, respectfully, drop literally anything you’re doing and listen to this song. Mulatu Astatke’s cosmic and dreamy compositions are that important.
Billsful blues to bless your ears. Light a candle, put this album on and let yourself melt away into the night.
5. Lovin' Blues
American singer Bobby “Blue” Bland’s seamlessly joins gospel, blues and R&B to narrate stories of love, lust and loss. Husky, yet tender, sugary, yet strong, Bland’s impact on blues is a memory to live on through the ages.
A strong reverence for classical music, a finger on the pulse of pop and an encyclopedic knowledge of jazz culminated in Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s striking discography. Making most of his own instruments, playing several horns at once and maintaining creative control of all his projects allowed for Kirk to create powerful and influential jazz for the ages.
An early auteur of electronic piano, clavinets and synthesizers, Herbie Hancock
concocted a track fit for high fidelity city slickers, coffee shop dwellers and cozy
homebodies alike.
Herbie Hancock’s imaginative jazz later led him to start the Headhunters, a fusion band borrowing heavily from rock and funk trends. This sexy and soulful track clings to you like sweat on skin on a humid summer night.
“Elijah” is fascinating interpretive trumpet sensation redolent of old leather couches, cigarette smoke at an old gas station or stepping into a warm home on a long cold winter’s day.
Soul legend Donny Hathaway makes music that melts like chocolate on your tongue. “Voices Inside (Everything is Everything)” displays a coy mastery of instruments, a breadth of vocal range and a delicate vulnerability few artists come close to matching.
